Hawaiian Koa

When used in your instrument, koa beautifully incorporates midrange and top-end together to produce a pleasantly warm chime.

True Hawaiian koa can best be compared to walnut in terms of density. Koa combines midrange characteristic of mahogany with the top end of maple. As a koa instrument is played, it will open up and reveal more of the midrange to reveal a more resonant tone than when first played after assembly.

Grading

Koa is similar to diamonds. There are different grades that reflect the quality and attractivenes of the wood. The predominant factor considered when grading koa is the presence of curl. Even though koa can range from light golden colors to darker chocolate browns, color is not typically considered when grading except where mineral staining or similar defects are present. Koa is graded based on these guidelines:

  • High Curl

    • Bold, tight curls prevalent throughout the entire piece with no imperfections. Some sets have a strong curl throughout most of the piece with very limited, if any, areas where curl fades

  • Medium Curl

    • Strong curl in some areas although curl visibility may be limited at specific angles

  • Select/Better

    • Wood is quater-sawn but there is very little if any curl throughout the piece

Tone Wood Dimensions

Having properly sized wood to work with is the first requirement for any project. We understand that luthiers have no room for inaccuracies so we strive to provide you with ample material to work with. Each set is templated in chalk to show that we can fit the minimum dimensions of whichever instrument size is shown. We don't remove the live edge of the set and we don't cut rectangles for final products. We believe koa is too rare and too valuable and how you prefer to cut the wood may differ from our opinion so we let you decide. The dimensions of our templates for each instrument are:

  • Tenor - Ukulele

    • Top/Back - 4.5" x 14" (114 mm x 356 mm)

    • Side - 3.25" x 18" (83 mm x 457 mm)

  • Concert - Ukulele

    • Top/Back - 3.75" x 12" (95 mm x 305 mm)

    • Side - 3" x 16.5" (76 mm x 419 mm)

  • Soprano - Ukulele

    • Top/Back - 3.25" x 10.5" (83 mm x 267 mm)

    • Side - 2.5" x 15" (64 mm x 381 mm)

Phytosanitary Practices

Taking care of the forest and the wood we harvest from it is our most important responsibility. We kiln dry all of our sets at a temperature between 110-115°F for a minimum period of 1 week or until all of the moisture readings show the moisture in all sets is below 5%. We debark all sets whenever possible and always when shipping internationally. We can provide phytosanitary certificates from the Department of Agriculture when required by your country for a small additional fee. Please contact us if unsure of the phytosanitary requirements for importing wood to your country if not from the United States.
